The fourth to sixth notes are also a tone apart and are also fa, sol, la. The seventh and eighth notes, being separated by a semitone, are indicated mi-fa.

Each letter name corresponds to the letter of the alphabet. The scale in our time looks like this: C (Do), D (Re), E (Mi), F (Fa), G (Sol), A (La), H (Si). But in the old days instead of the note Si was used Si-flat and it was denoted by the letter "B". And the lowest of the used notes was A (La).

Tonic sol-fa emphasizes the relation of the notes to one another and to the tonic, or key note (do in major scales, la in minor scales). If the key changes, do (or la) shifts to a new pitch (similar to the old practice of mutation). A special notation using the initial letters of each syllable is utilized.
The solfa representation distinguishes three types of data tokens: pitches, rests, and barlines. Pitches tokens are represented using the syllables do, re, mi, fa, so, la, and ti — or their chromatic alterations: di, da, ri, ra, etc. (see table below). Tonic solfa syllables can be determined only with reference to some prevailing key.
